Taun Gusi Village Homestay is a community based
homestay which embraces 10 different certified homestay operators. Our
homestay is based in Taun Gusi, a small cosy village 6 km away from Kota Belud.
We started in October 2011 and right now we run 27 rooms. The rooms and the
houses have been built with our own initiative and expenses. The host families
are Bajau ethnic and all are Muslim. Guests from different countries and
beliefs are welcome, however they should adapt to Muslim traditions such us
cooking only Halal food and not drinking alcohol within the premises.
We
integrate our guests as members of our families, we treat them equally. We
encourage them to enjoy meals with us, relax and go out all together to visit
the local area. We are proud of our area and we promote different activities to
show our guests the beauty and the richness of this part of Borneo. We show
them the local culture and we encourage them to take part in cultural
activities such us; music and dance performances called Bertitik.
There
are many tourist attractions around Kota Belud. Our guests can enjoy the
morning and evening views of the Mount Kinabalu which are breath-taking.
However, this area has not been exploited by the tourism industry and it is
easy to find tranquillity and authenticity. We encourage our guest to be part
of our daily activities, like visiting the local market, cooking or going for a
walk through the rice fields that surround the village. Taun Gusi also has two
beautiful rivers, the Melangkap river and the Wario river. Both are a real
delight to swim and to be refreshed by their clear water coming from the Mount
Kinabalu. There are other rivers in the area that offer the opportunity to go
on a river cruise where you will see the Proboscis monkeys, fireflies and other
local wildlife such us buffaloes, birds and lizards.
Kota
Belud´s Bajaus ethnic, are renowned for their horsemanship and that gave them
the nickname of the “Cowboys of the East”. On special occasions, they dress the
horses with costumes and display impressive riding skills, a great opportunity
for guests to take beautiful photographs. Another very particular activity that
can be arranged is the traditional Bajau metal work, where the locals heat and
forge the working knives known as Parang.
While
staying in our homestay, guests will have the opportunity to taste some of the
Sabah´s finest cuisine, given the wide variety of cooking styles and cultural
influence. Two examples of this cuisine are the “Penjaram” and the “Ikan
Ampap”.
This
is a place for tourists that are looking for a quiet location and in search of
an experience with Sabah´s rural life. To be a guest in a homestay is much more
than sleeping in a room and having some services, is more about the feeling of
being part of a family, getting involved in the community and contributing to
the sustainable development of a local village. We are proud to say that we
found the balance of developing tourist attractions while respecting the nature
that surrounds us.
Are you willing to experience the rural
Sabah?
Feel
free to browse around this website and get in touch with us. We look forward to
hear from you.

Homestay Coordinator.
